About Copenhagen Center for Glycocalyx Research (CGR)
Welcome to Copenhagen Center for Glycocalyx Research (CGR), a Danish National Research Center devoted to understanding how cell-surface molecules mediate communication between cells and their environment.
All communication between cells involves the cell surface. CGR focuses on how diseases such as inflammation and degenerative disorders affect glycans and glycan-binding proteins, shaping the protein networks at the cell surface. We study how disease-associated changes in these configurations and networks alter cellular signaling and aim to understand and explore how disease-specific changes in protein patterns can be used for targeted therapies.
The Copenhagen Center for Glycocalyx Research was established as a Center of Excellence by the Danish National Research Foundation (DNRF) in 2025. CGR is additionally supported by several other funding agencies, including the Lundbeck Foundation, the Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Leo Foundation, and the European Union.
CGR is part of Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
Around 50 scientists, students, and technicians are currently working at CGR. In addition, the center regularly hosts visiting researchers from Denmark and abroad.
